Ptarmigan Hunting

Ptarmigan hunting

Ptarmigan hunting is a traditional form of hunting with deep historical roots. In Sweden, it played an essential role in survival in the northern mountain regions as recently as the early 20th century. Over the past 30 years, however, it has evolved into a popular form of recreation during the autumn and late winter seasons.

What makes ptarmigan hunting unique is the combination of excitement, challenge, and breathtaking scenery—an experience few other hunting forms can match. Wildlife encounters are frequent, and the density of game is relatively high.

With seasonal bases in Kvikkjokk, Nikkaluokta, Kiruna–Kurravaara, and Abisko, Kallax Flyg offers both helicopter transport and support to several of the most popular ptarmigan hunting areas in northern Sweden. You can read more about specific offers and conditions for each location.

Below, you’ll find general advice and instructions regarding our hunting-related services.

Please pack your gear in soft bags, ideally between 20–60 liters in size. Avoid having loose or hanging items attached to the outside of the bag.

Good to Know

Ptarmigan hunting typically takes place in remote, roadless mountain terrain, far from inhabited areas and often with limited communication possibilities. This means that your trip should be well-planned in terms of equipment, sudden weather changes, and potential illness or accidents. Be prepared to stay at your camp longer than originally intended if necessary.

When it comes to equipment, proper clothing is particularly critical—ensure you have adequate spare and insulating layers. To guarantee that help can reach you even if you cannot communicate or send an alert, you should agree on check-in times with your pilot and inform friends or family about your plans.
